International Humanitarian Law

Welcome to the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Wiki! the free legal resource for IHL practitioners, academics and experts

Imagine if every person who litigated, studied or taught IHL, every prosecutor, jurist, private attorney, academic, and scholar -- all shared freely in the sum of knowledge...

The IHL Wiki is a knowledge repository for anyone involved in International Humanitarian Law. It is designed as an open, collaborative site where peers can preserve and share their knowledge of IHL, whether they are a lawyer at an International Tribunal, a law school professor, a humanitarian law expert or even a student. It is based on the "Wiki" model, a consensus-based format. The IHL Wiki is available for anyone to peruse, and anyone can create or edit an article after they have obtained a free IHL Wiki account. This idea of immediate and continuous revision has proven to be revolutionary in knowledge management. This format is best known from the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, currently one of the top 10 most-visited sites in the world. While liberally allowing users to edit, the IHL Wiki can easily revert back to earlier versions if inappropriate edits occur, and violative users can be blocked from future edits. There are also provisions for private, secured areas upon request.

This site is designed to synergize the work between the various Tribunals, and between practitioners and scholars around the world. We welcome and we need your contribution to the site. We are also looking for volunteer editors so please get involved by clicking the edit link on any page. We have a number of judgements and decisions to summarize to get the Wiki completely current. If you are interested as serving as an editor of a section of the Wiki or in summarizing an IHL judgement, please let us know.

A good place to begin your exploration is the index in the left pane of this page or the list of all pages.

If you would like to practice editing on a sample page, click here. If you would like some tips on editing, click here.

Keep in mind, we are new and in the process of currently constructing this site. As we experiment with its architecture and styles, users are encouraged to contribute feedback about how to make the site more logical and helpful to you.

Enjoy!
